Confirmation

Filled with the Holy Spirit, they proclaimed the Lord Jesus.

Two-year Confirmation Program Begins

At it’s April 2007 meeting, the Parent Advisory Board approved a new two-year Confirmation Program for St. Denis Parish. The program will begin in the 7th grade with the celebration of the sacrament in the 8th grade.  The two-year program was implemented and reaffirmed by the Advisory Board in the fall of 2007.

The new program is intended to allow for more thought and reflection in the following areas:

a)           The close relationship between the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and identification of the Church of Baptism in the first year.

b)          Selection of a Confirmation Name and Sponsor in the first year and earlier notification of this information to the Office of Religious Education.

c)           Participation in Community Service activities each year.

d)          Greater opportunities for prayer (i.e. different prayer forms in the classroom and half-day retreat on-site each year with opportunities for prayer in the Memorial Garden).

e)           Involvement with the Sponsors during the second year.

f)            Understanding of and input in the liturgy for the Celebration of Confirmation in the second year.

g)          Mystagogy (i.e. reflection following the Celebration of Confirmation).

Choosing a Confirmation Name and Sponsor

By the end of the first year, students will have selected a Confirmation name and sponsor. They can bring this information to class along with the contact information of their sponsor so that we can mail the Sponsor’s Handbook.

A great resource on the saints can be found here to help your youth find a role model as a follower of Jesus.

Parish Community Service Opportunities

10 HOURS REQUIRED both in First and Second years—5 in PARISH and 5 OFF-SITE.

A list of seasonal opportunities in the parish will be e-mailed to the parents to share with their youth.

Community Service Hours Record

From previous years, we know the youth can accomplish 5 hours through Parish activities and 5 more hours in school service projects or service out in the community for a total of 10 hours. Sign-ups for Parish opportunities will be posted in the classrooms.

Curriculum

In the first year, a series of texts by Resources for Christian Living (RCL) allow for more flexibility in designing a course of study. Each 12-chapter book includes special Scripture chapters, a weekly challenge to put the Gospel into action, and questions that encourage family discussion

We are pleased to present in the second year the text Confirmation by Resources for Christian Living (RCL). Click here for information on their web site for families and sponsors with ideas for family prayer, faith sharing, and activities.

Candidate Book In each of 8 chapters, candidates discover one of the elements of the Confirmation ritual, explore real life examples, and enter into activities, discussion and reflection.

Sponsor Handbook Adult reflection and discussion questions for each chapter encourage sponsors to walk with the candidates throughout the preparation time.

Parent Involvement Much of what we do would not be possible without the involvement of parents who are willing to contribute their time and effort in the classroom and in community service projects in support of their youth. Also, receptions held following the sacraments are also an opportunity to contribute to the parish to help make the celebrations special for all of the families.

Catechist Formation

Our local Deanery—area represented by neighboring Catholic parishes—is pleased to present a series of training workshops both in the summer and winter for adults interested in exploring catechetical ministry. Attendance at these workshops also counts towards Basic Catechist Certification in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Our aim is to have a team of two adults to teach in every grade level. They may take turns presenting the lessons week to week. We offer continued support and opportunities for further enrichment at the annual Faith Formation Conference. If you’re interested in exploring this ministry, please contact Mr. Victor Valdez in the Office of Religious Education, vvaldez@stdenisparish.org

Parent Advisory Board

On September 18, 2005, a group of interested parents gathered to form a Parent Advisory Board for the Religious Education Program. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 8:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room in the Parish Offices.  Parishioners interested in joining the Parent Advisory Board are encouraged to inquire with Mr. Victor Valdez, Parish Catechetical Leader, 854-1081 or vvaldez@stdenisparish.org

Catechesis for the Whole Community

Watch our calendar for the Fall and Spring Sunday Family Potluck suppers. Your family is welcome to join in these gatherings in the Monsignor John Rodriguez Parish Center. Also look for the seasonal Parish Picnic with the celebration of the Eucharist outdoors in the Memorial Garden. Come to one or all.
