On July 6, 2010, Archbishop George Niederauer made this announcement, "I am pleased to announce that Pope Benedict XVI has named Msgr. Robert McElroy today to be Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco. This appointment was announced at the Vatican, and in Washington, D.C., by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Papal Nuncio. As many of you know, Bishop-elect McElroy has been serving as Pastor of Saint Gregory Church in San Mateo for the past fourteen years. We ask the people of the Archdiocese and all of our brothers and sisters in the Catholic Church to join us in praying for him, and for the gifts and the graces he will need to carry out his apostolic office." Congratulations to Bishop-elect Msgr. Bob McElroy!
