Ascension of the Lord

May 16, 2010

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus to the Father. Luke gives two accounts of it: in his Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles. Mark mentions the event and Matthew and John do not speak about it. But, Luke describes it vividly and then concludes it with these words, "They did him homage and returned to Jerusalem with great Joy." There is something very sad about leave taking. But the apostles were filled with Joy. When we part with someone we love, that person somehow becomes all the more present spiritually. The apostles realized that Jesus was all the more present, not less, in being ascended to the Father. That is why they were able to courageously bear witness to Christ and preach in his name to the ends of the earth!

Another year of Religious Education program has come to an end. I would like to thank Rosemary Lyon for directing the program. I would like to thank all the teachers, aids and all the volunteers who worked with Rosemary in making the program a success. And, congratulations to all the young people who received the sacrament of Confirmation and the children who received First Communion!

Yours Sincerely,
Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor
