First Sunday of Lent

February 21, 2010

Dear Parishioners,

We are in the season of Lent and the Gospel reading of this Sunday presents us with the temptation of Jesus. The three temptations serve to correct a false understanding of the mission of Christ. The temptations that Jesus faced are also faced by every follower of His. The problem that most people face is their failure to know themselves, to recognize evil and deal with it within themselves. We should remember that God is always with us in our struggles and is always helping us to overcome our temptations. St. Augustine wrote, "It is through temptation that we come to know ourselves. We cannot win our crown unless we overcome, and we cannot overcome unless we enter the contest, and there is no contest unless we have an enemy and the temptations he brings."

During the Lenten season, there will be a special Mass at St. Denis on every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm, followed by a soup supper at the Parish Center.

On Tuesday the 23rd of February there will be a talk given by Fr. David Pettingill at St. Denis Parish Center at 7:00 pm. I would like you all to come and listen to this presentation by Fr. Pettingill. Being the Year of the Priest, he will speak on how we all, as Baptized Christians, share in the Priesthood of Christ.

You will see the US flag and the Vatican flag in the sanctuary at OLW church. I would like to thank Adele McPartland for donating the flags. Thank you!

Yours Sincerely,
Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor
